PodiPodi - Inspired by Enso but different from Enso

Enso lets you do common computing tasks easier and faster than ever before (from Humanized.com)

PodiPodi is a project in Human-Machine Interaction inspired by Enso from Humanized, Inc., Enso is a command line interface for your desktop system, through Enso you can interact in a fast and easy way with your operating system just by typing some simple commands like open firefox or calculate (for an exhaustive description of Enso visit humanized.com).

At PodiPodi project we have felt in love with Enso at first sight and from that moment we started to think about a similar platform for the web, PodiPodi is the result of our imagination and efforts: a special widget that makes possible the integration of a smart command line interface and a bunch of additional services directly into your website to perform common web-tasks.

Last update: PodiPodi now offers two new services (Google Maps and Wikipedia), more control on podipodi splash screen (cookie based) and a great hidden feature called "linkable commands"!
Update: PodiPodi now offers a fancy Joyful Version that gives the user another way to interact through a graphical user interface based on big colored icons.

User Interface

PodiPodi is another User Interface for your website.
Have you ever wanted to give your users an additional layer of interaction in your website without redesigning it? Sometime you simply want your users to browse your pages without forcing them to learn your-too-innovative hand-crafted navigation system or would like to give them a way to search the web or send you a comment without leaving your intersting pages, well PodiPodi it's an easy to use yet innovative command line interface through which users can know your site better, browse your sections just typing "open section name" or search google or yahoo images.

Linkable commands 

Thanks to PodiPodi you can add more power to your links!
This is a new hidden feature of PodiPodi through which you can link html tags to single podipodi's commands (i.e. clicking here you can search picture of the sea on flickr), this way the users are not forced to learn how to launch and use podipodi. Linking commands to html tags is super simple: just add the podipodi classname to a tag and fill the rel with the command you want to execute:

Linkable commands are a powerful feature of PodiPodi because they transform your normal links to powerful services serving detailed commands to your users.

Additional services 

PodiPodi is not just another UI for your website, it also provides a bunch of services for your website. Something that really excite us is the unobtrusive way these services are added to a website.
Thanks to PodiPodi, web designers can integrate services like Google web searches and Yahoo Images without changing any graphical details in their web sites.
These are some of the services we have added during this beta testing phase:

  • Info: Show additional information about the website (additional info about podipodi)
  • Calculate: Calculate the result of a simple mathematical expression.
  • Send a comment: Visitors of the site can send messages to the web owner (send us a comment)
  • Credits: Show web site's credits
  • Tell a friend: Visitors can send messages to their friends and tell them about the website (tell a friend about podipodi)
  • Bookmarks: display a list of websites saved by the site's owner
  • Sitemap: Show the site map of the website for a better navigation
  • Open: Built upon the Sitemap command it opens a page of the website
  • Flickr: show web designer's pictures posted in Flickr or search for photos on Flickr (flickr pizza)
  • Find: Find the text the user is looking for and highlight the words containing the searched text
  • Google Web Search: make possible to perform searches through Google, parameters (languages, regions, etc.) are customizable (google podipodi)
  • Google Images Search: make possible to perform searches through Google Images, parameters (languages, regions, etc.) are customizable

Google Gadgets
You can extend PodiPodi with Google Gadgets. Thanks to Google huge widgets database every webdesigner can embed thousands of great gadgets and create customized commands for PodiPodi.
Gadgets are simple HTML and Javascript applications than can be embedded in webpages, unfortunately adding a gadget often drives to a layout re-design, thanks to PodiPodi it's possibile to keep the website great and embed new functions at the same time.

How does it works?

PodiPodi is a widget developed in javascript language and based on jQuery. Thanks to the architecture of jQuery you can add the magical box UI to your website even if you are using other javascript framework.
